On March 5th, Mel Melton was a Celebrity Guest Soup Judge at the third annual Urban Ministries of Durham’s EMPTY BOWLS Benefit! Dick Gordon, of NPR radio fame, took time out to MC this fundraiser - and the other judges joining Mel were: Tisha Powell, anchor of WTVD-TV; Bill Kalkoff of Downtown Durham Inc.; and Winston Rojas, chef at the Urban Ministries of Durham Community Kitchen.
Over 600 attendees enjoyed soup, bread & dessert, handcrafted bowls by local potters and raffle prizes. Participating restaurants were Kimono, blu seafood & bar, Six Plates, Taverna Nikos, Watts Grocery, Revolution, Rue Cler and Whole Foods - with TOP SOUP HONORS going to Chef Ted Domville from SIx Plates for his Sweet Potato Soup. There was also a “People’s Choice Award” that went to chef/owner Amy Tornquist, of Watts Grocery for their Pork Stew. Congrats to all for such a successful effort!

The UMD Community kitchen served over 180,000 meals to over 4500 people last year. For more information visit www.umdurham.org.
We are having to be more patient than we like for this year’s CRAWFISH! Seems it’s a slow-to-start season this year -- we’ll spread the word loud & strong when we get our first shipment in! We’re ALL craving a Crawfish Boil!

LITTLE RONNIE’S BLUES HARMONICA BLOW-OUT
We’re excited to announce a three-way Harmonica BlowOut happening here at the Roadhouse that is part of a 3-city tour (Charlotte, Durham, Richmond). On March 27th, LITTLE RONNIE’S BLUES HARMONICA BLOW-OUT will showcase 3 great HARMONICA PROS: Greg “Fingers” Taylor (a founding member of Buffet’s Coral Reefer Band), Ronnie Owens (and his fabulous band, the “Grand Dukes”), and our own Mel Melton (the notorious zydeco-harmonica bluesman).
This will be one heck of a chance to see these three harmonica veterans having a time together with what they do best. Don’t hesitate -- $20 tickets go on sale March 17th and they will fly pretty fast!!
